Sri Lankan troops breaks key rebel defence line

Sri Lankan government forces say they have broken through a key Tamil Tiger rebel defence line in the far north of the Jaffna peninsula. The military said ten soldiers and 50 rebels were killed during the four-day battle. The rebels still have two other defence lines behind the 8 kilometre deep area that was captured. Meanwhile, Amnesty International has accused the government of failing to provide proper food and shelter to 300,000 people who fled the fighting. Amnesty also accuses the rebels of using displaced people as human shields. The Sri Lankan government has made several strategic advances, ever since it pulled out of a Norwegian-brokered truce with the rebels in April.
